The high-school decision in Gauteng usually turns on three things: matric board, subject range and travel time. IEB and the National Senior Certificate are both recognised for university entrance, with IEB more common in the independent sector; Cambridge is a third route that suits families who may move abroad. Subject range matters more than it appears at Grade 8 — schools differ widely on whether they offer engineering graphics, drama, third languages or advanced programme mathematics, and a subject not offered is effectively a door closed by Grade 10. Public-school applications go through the provincial system on a fixed timetable; independents run their own and often assess in Grade 6.
