Coding has moved from novelty to mainstream extra-mural in Gauteng over the last few years, helped along by robotics and coding entering the school curriculum. Programmes for younger children are block-based — Scratch, or drag-and-drop robotics with Lego-style kits — and are really about logic and sequencing rather than programming as such. From about age eleven, providers move to text-based languages like Python and JavaScript, and the better ones have a visible progression path rather than repeating projects each term. Class sizes of eight to twelve are usual. Most centres supply the hardware, so you should not need to buy a laptop or a robotics kit to start.
