Music tuition is usually sold as individual weekly lessons of 30 to 45 minutes, priced per lesson but billed by the term, which catches some parents out when a term runs eleven weeks rather than ten. Group classes are cheaper and work well for early-years music appreciation, but most instrument teaching moves to one-on-one from around age seven. If exams matter to you, ask whether the teacher prepares pupils for UNISA, Trinity or ABRSM — the syllabuses differ and switching mid-grade is disruptive. Practice instruments at home are assumed for piano and strings; several Gauteng studios rent instruments monthly, which is worth asking about before buying.
