Parents come to drama for two quite different reasons: confidence and communication, or genuine performance ambition. Most Gauteng academies cater primarily to the first, running weekly group classes that build on improvisation, movement and speech, with a showcase at the end of the year rather than auditioned productions. Speech and drama examinations through Trinity College London or the Eisteddfod are offered by many of the same providers as an optional extra, usually at additional cost for entry fees and accompaniment. Class groups are age-banded and typically eight to fifteen children. Musical theatre classes tend to require a bigger time commitment in the run-up to a production.
