Swimming is the one extra-mural most South African parents treat as non-negotiable, and Gauteng's indoor heated pools mean lessons run year-round rather than only in summer. Baby classes generally start from six months and are parent-in-the-water; independent lessons usually begin around age three. Class sizes matter more here than in most activities — four to six children per instructor is typical for beginners, and one-on-one is common for children who are anxious in water. Ask whether the pool is heated to at least 30°C for under-fives, and whether instructors hold a recognised learn-to-swim qualification alongside current first aid.
