Gauteng has a genuinely strong museum offering for children, anchored by the interactive science centres where exhibits are built to be handled rather than observed. Term-time weekday mornings are heavily booked by school groups, so family visits work better in the afternoon or at weekends. Most sites offer a family ticket that undercuts individual entry, and several of the larger museums are free or donation-based on specific days. Attention span is the real constraint: two hours is a realistic ceiling for primary-aged children, and the venues with an outdoor area or café to break the visit up tend to work better than those without.
