Therapists working with children in South Africa must be registered with the Health Professions Council, and the registration number is worth asking for — it is checkable online and it also determines whether your medical aid will pay. Most plans cover a limited number of sessions a year from savings or a specified benefit, so it is worth confirming the code and the rate before starting. Referrals often come from a school or a paediatrician, but you do not need one to book an assessment directly. Many practices offer school visits, which for younger children is frequently more useful than clinic sessions because the therapist sees the difficulty in context.
