The JoziKids weekend brief

Gauteng public-school admissions run through the provincial online application system, which opens in the winter and works on feeder zones — your home or work address determines your priority at a given school, so proof of residence matters. Private and independent schools run their own timelines, most opening applications two years ahead, and many require an assessment as well as an interview. Fees vary enormously and the advertised figure rarely includes textbooks, aftercare, tours or extra-murals, so ask for the full annual cost. If your child is likely to need learning support, ask specifically what the school provides in-house rather than assuming a remedial teacher is on staff.
