Junior sport in Gauteng splits into two quite different offerings, and it helps to know which you are buying. Development programmes for ages two to seven focus on coordination, listening and confidence, run in short 45-minute sessions, and rarely involve fixtures. Club and squad coaching from about age eight onwards is more serious: expect weekly practices plus weekend matches, a kit cost, and a season that follows the school sporting calendar. Coach-to-child ratios of around one to ten are standard for the younger groups. Many providers run holiday clinics as a low-commitment way to try a sport before signing up for a full term.
