Gauteng's outdoor spaces range from free municipal parks to gated botanical gardens and reserves with an entry fee, and the difference in facilities is usually the deciding factor for families with small children — ablutions, shade and safe parking rather than the space itself. Weekend mornings are the sweet spot before the heat and the crowds. Many reserves allow picnics but prohibit fires without a booked braai site. If you are walking with a pram, check surfaces: several of the best-known reserves have gravel or grass paths that a light stroller will not manage. Winter visits are underrated here — the highveld dry season means reliably clear mornings from May to August.
