About this place
The Origins Centre and Museum tells a story of how all humans began in Africa, developed tools, language, art and spirituality.
The Origins Centre
The Origins Centre take visitors on an extraordinary journey of discovery, which begins with the origins of humankind in Africa, and moving through the development of art, symbolism and technology on the continent. The exhibits explore the diverse southern African rock art traditions β the worldβs oldest continuous art forms. The museum houses artworks that rediscover the ancient masterworks in a contemporary world. On our premises we have the museum, a fantastic shop with local art and crafts inspired by the museum, and Africana book store with lots of great books for all ages, and the privately-run FoodArt restaurant.
Kids can explore and learn about archaeology
The museum offers a hands-on learning experience for kids to learn about the history of humankind. Children will love being able to touch archaeological objects, handle replica hominid skulls that are tucked away, waiting to be discovered, or bring the animals in the rock engravings to life using augmented reality. We offer also fun 'ancient painting' workshops, and a range of workshops and talks linked to the school curricula (pre-booking essential).
Holiday activities
We have regular family fun days at which a variety of activities available - all designed to entertain and educate children of all ages. Activities include: archaeological dig, art activities, treasure hunts, weaving, stone tools, music with stones, and dinosaur puzzles. They will have the chance to interact with archaeologists and learn more about this interesting career.

This is a fantastic museum for the whole family. My 8 year old loved it. Lots to learn and see. We really enjoyed the displays, the museum shop is great for gifts and we spent time exploring indigenous plants in the court yard. A great afternoon.
